Astrology of the Full Moon: The Full Moon of July 30, 2007

July 6, 2007 by

Astrology Moon Chart - Astrology of the Full Moon of July 30, 2007 - Rishi Calling Up Storm

This Full Moon horoscope looks relatively uneventful for Washington, DC (and I use that word advisedly!). We do not have any planets very close to the angles, with probably the best contender for an angular planet being Jupiter in Sagittarius in the 10th house. Jupiter rules the 10th house and 11th houses of the King (in our case, the president) and his advisors/the Army, respectively. Jupiter is of course very strongly placed, being angular and in its own sign. However, it is also retrograde, indicating some kind of retreat or change of direction.

This change will likely be triggered by the Sun’s trine to Jupiter (symbolically speaking, not necessarily by transit). The Sun is strong in its own sign of Leo, and it rules the seventh house of the nation’s open enemies. So the nation’s open enemies are forcing the government to take a different direction. The US government still has the advantage, as it is much more strongly placed in the 10th house than the cadent Sun, but the Sun is in a fixed sign, so it is not wavering in its purpose.

Full Moon of July 30, 2007 - Astrology Moon Chart - Horoscope for Washington, D.C.

This theme is repeated, somewhat less pleasantly, by the Moon’s application to sextile Jupiter. The Moon rules the sixth house of illness, subordinates, and general nastiness and unpleasantness. In terms of a mundane horoscope, these are all the areas where the well-being of the country harmed. Because the Moon symbolizes all of these bad things and applies to contact Jupiter, this is another indicator of unpleasant/unfavorable circumstances forcing the government’s hand in reassessing their situation.

August Weather – U.S. East Coast

I don’t often comment on weather outside of the Western states in the United States, but this full Moon horoscope really caught my eye. As we go south along the East Coast from Washington, DC, the extremely nasty square between Mars in its fall in Taurus and Saturn in detriment in Leo becomes angular. Angularity empowers these two planets to do their thing, and this combination presages violent, windy storms for the month, with the effects being felt relatively far up north on the East Coast. The effects seem particularly acute in Florida, and the adjoining states. Of course for this location, a stormy August is nothing new!

Predictive Astrology: Summer 2007 Current Affairs

What to Write - Illustrating Predictive Astrology: Summer 2007 Current Events, Political and Mundane Astrological Prediction for July, August, September 2007 in the United States

The astrology of politics and current events is fascinating indeed, and perhaps the toughest to get right, because there are so many influences happening at the same time. In this article, we will look at the major influences shaping up for the United States this summer.

The Aries ingress horoscope this year set for Washington, DC had a Cardinal ascendant, which means that we have to cast a new chart for every Cardinal ingress until the Aries ingress 2008.

The horoscope for the Sun’s entry into Cancer in Washington, DC is below:

Cancer Ingress Horoscope 2007 - Illustrating Predictive Astrology: Summer 2007 Current Events, Political and Mundane Astrological Prediction for July, August, September 2007 in the United States

The Lord of the year is the planet that is most strongly placed in the horoscope; in this case, that will be Mercury conjunct the midheaven. Mercury is very weak; it is Peregrine and retrograde/under the sunbeams. So the overall flavor of current events in Washington this summer will be problematic. Because Mercury is just outside the 10th house cusp (the house of the King, or in our case, the president), the problems will chiefly afflict the leadership of this country.

Mercury rules merchants, lawyers, politicians, and scribes/writers. It rules the ninth house, which is the house of secret enemies to the King (the 12th from the 10th). So the president/government will be afflicted by secret enemies who are merchants, lawyers, etc. this affliction may be in response to something the president or the government had done, as Mercury is in mutual reception with the ruler of the 10th house, the Moon. The president’s supporters, cabinet, or the Army will seek to stop the secret enemies, because the Sun, ruler of the president’s second house, afflicts Mercury.

So how is the King? The Moon is in the 12th house of secrets, Peregrine, and without aspects. He does not have very much power to act in the situation, though the mutual reception with Mercury suggests that true political disaster will not strike. At the very least, the leadership and the secret enemies are interdependent, creating a situation of mutually assured destruction.

I noted that Mars is in the seventh house in its own sign. The traditional authorities say that a strong and angular Mars in an ingress horoscope means war. Since we are already at war, we will be seeing more of it. This placement reminds me of the Mars in Scorpio in the seventh house in President Bush’s 2001 inauguration chart, which forecast the Iraq war.

Astrology of Politics: Jupiter Trine Saturn on March 16, 2007

February 26, 2007 by

Old Man and Grandson

It seems as though it was only yesterday that we talked about the effects of Jupiter square Saturn on the Republican Party here in the United States. Jupiter and Saturn now trine one another, so we see yet another step in the evolution of the seed potentials sown in 2000, when Jupiter and Saturn conjoined. The horoscope for Jupiter trine Saturn, set for Washington, DC (in GMT) is below:

Jupiter Trine Saturn - March 16, 2007

Notice how Jupiter, which is quite strong because it is in its own sign of Sagittarius, a strongly placed right at the bottom of the chart in the angular fourth house. Saturn, by contrast, could not be weaker. It is in Leo, retrograde, and in the 12th house. However, Saturn in the 12th house is in the house of his joy, and Saturn can be quite strong in the 12th because it is as though he has his back against a wall and will not budge. This reminds me very strongly of the current political situation in Washington, DC, with the president and the Cabinet being extremely defensive about their foreign policies.

However, in the United States grand conjunction chart, Jupiter rules the 10th house of the ruler. Therefore, any aspects to Jupiter that Saturn in its detriment makes can be seen as afflictions to the country’s ruler. It is fascinating to see that the ruler of the country, Jupiter, is in the fourth house, which is the very bottom of the chart, and it is afflicted out of the 12th house of self undoing, secrets, and hidden enemies.

The unusual thing with this particular trine is that Jupiter and Saturn will continue to move together and be sort of locked in this trine for the next three months, when the exact aspect will occur again in May 2007. This is fairly unusual, that the two planets are going to be in aspect for so long, giving us the sense that any pressures in place around March 16, will remain in place through May.

Free Astrology Advice: Horary Question – Will the U.S. Go to War Against Iran?

February 14, 2007 by

Two Soldiers on Horseback

Horary Question:

Will the U.S. go to war against Iran? I was just reading in the Guardian (British newspaper) that George Bush is going full steam ahead to bomb Iranian nuclear sites before he leaves office.

—G.

Nina Gryphon:

Dear G.,

Yours is certainly an interesting question, and it is unusual in that it affects many more people than just yourself and those around you. Horary astrology can be very helpful in answering specific questions, and it usually does best in answering questions in which we ourselves have a direct personal stake. Things like wars between nations are best ascertained from eclipse charts, charts for great conjunctions, and so on. However, at the very least, answering this question will showcase some of the techniques that ancient astrologers used for answering such questions with horary. Again, we must emphasize that the old astrologers used to work for the people who were actually waging the wars, as many of them were in the employ of kings, princes, and various war-loving nobles. We have to expect different levels of accuracy if Bush asks this question than if you, the average American, ask the question.

I cast a chart for the moment that I understood your question, and the horary chart is below:

US Bomb Iran? Horary Question

We first see that the ascending degree is 28.5° Aries, a late degree. This can show that the questioner feels the situation is somehow inevitable. Given the overwhelming pressure that the US has been putting on Iran, your feelings are not unjustified. Since you are an American, we will give the US the first house and its ruler, Mars in Capricorn. Iran is ruled by the seventh house of the open enemy, and its ruler, Venus in Pisces. We also look at the Moon as the general flow of events, and notice that it is in Scorpio and void of course. When the Moon is void of course, absent any other testimony, we assume that nothing will happen.

We notice that Venus and Mars are in mutual reception by triplicity, giving us a sense that both parties have a lot at stake here, and the incentive to resolve issues without going to war is quite high. William Lilly, the 17th-century astrologer, writes that armies will clash when the Lord of the first and Lord of the seventh houses are conjunct in an angle, or aspecting one another with a square or opposition. It can also happen if the above aspects between the two planets are created by the translation or collection of light. We see that Venus and Mars are applying to a sextile; so under Lilly’s rules, this would not indicate war. However, we can expect some kind of contact between the two countries, given that it is a sextile, one would hope it is diplomatic rather than military.

Another way to analyze this horoscope is to treat it as a “is the rumor true?” type of horary. For that, we look at the angles, looking for fixity. We have Cardinal signs, which is not terribly encouraging as far as reliability. We have Gemini on the third house of rumors, which is highly unreliable, and its ruler Mercury is highly afflicted by its placement in Pisces, which is another mutable sign. So, though I am not a fan of “is the rumor true?” questions, I believe that from this perspective, the rumor is shown to be untrue. All this, of course, taken with a big grain of salt for the reasons explained above.

Astrological Predictions for 2007: Jupiter in Sagittarius Trine Saturn in Leo

January 12, 2007 by

Old Friends

Last year, we saw the dramatic political effects of Jupiter squaring Saturn, and we saw that the conservative era ushered in during the 2000 elections was crashing and burning early. To recap very quickly, Jupiter and Saturn conjunct every 20 years, an event known as the Grand Conjunction. This sets the tone for the next 20 years, especially in political and world affairs.

During those 20 years, Jupiter and Saturn form additional aspects to one another, with the square aspect representing a challenge to the original seedling idea planted during the conjunction. This is the astrological reason that the Republicans lost control of Congress so dramatically in 2006. Their organization simply was not strong and resilient enough to withstand the challenges represented by the difficult square aspect. If they had been able to hold on last year, they would not have faced difficulties until the next decade, when Jupiter would oppose Saturn.

This year, we will see Jupiter trine Saturn, an aspect showing the harmonious growth of the idea formed during the conjunction. The 2000 conjunction was not auspicious for the United States, as it occurred in the 12th house of self undoing in the pre-1776 Grand Conjunction chart. The 12th house represents us harming ourselves, as well as secret enemies who undermine us through hidden means. As a result, we will see a great deal of internal strife, none of which is conducive to the growth of the country.

The 2000 conjunction is not all bad, however, as it sextiled Venus in Pisces and the Part of Fortune in the 11th house of friends and the King’s advisors. So there is some hope that allies and cabinet members can help us get out of the soup into which we have gotten ourselves. Jupiter trine Saturn this year indicates that 2007 heralds opportunities to improve our situation, and can allow others to help us do so.

Whether our government will actually take that opportunity depends largely on upcoming eclipses and lunations, which we will cover on this website as they come up.

The JupiterSaturn relationship is reflected in our personal lives as well, since every 20 years, the JupiterSaturn conjunction plants a seed in our natal horoscope which we then develop for the next 20 years. Just like with world events, we face challenges during the difficult aspects, and easier times with a sextile and trine aspects. To understand your personal meaning of JupiterSaturn in 2007, look at where the Grand Conjunction of 2000 took place in your horoscope, and consider how the square, trine, and opposition aspects are reflecting your own development.

Astrology of Current Affairs: Apple

January 11, 2007 by

Reaching for Apple

Apple Computers (or just Apple, as of yesterday) turned 30 earlier this month, and I couldn’t help but note some dramatic trends in its horoscope. As all things in the world, corporations have horoscopes, too. In the United States, at least, where one has to file papers for incorporation, we will have the day of incorporation, and the place (typically the state capital, where these matters are administered), and the charts are normally set for noon local time. Here is the horoscope for Apple (inner chart: natal, outer chart: secondary progressions for Jan 15, 2007):

Apple Horoscope

It has a few good things going for it: one, Jupiter just outside the second house of money (it’s good to be solvent!), and a close trine to that Jupiter by Mercury in the 10th house. One way to sum it up is that technology, which is ruled by Mercury, contributes to Apple’s bottom line very nicely.

I also like Mars in Capricorn in the ninth house squaring the Part of Fortune. The ninth house rules higher knowledge, foreign countries and foreigners. This aspect indicates that all these factors will be instrumental in enhancing Apple’s fortune.

There are some intriguing progressions going on with Apple’s horoscope, namely Mercury exactly squaring the ascendant-descendant axis and returning to its natal position. Hello, iPhone! The message is that Apple’s products will be at their apex at this time, and the technology that the company has produced will be riding high. However, Venus in Aries, ruler of the seventh house, has just opposed the natal Part of Fortune, indicating that enemies and opponents will cause some trying times for Apple.

I’m also watching the upcoming opposition of the progressed Sun to natal Saturn, which will not happen for another year. Given that Saturn rules the 10th house of the King, or in this case, Steve Jobs, and the Sun is the natural ruler of all kings, there might be some difficulties associated with the CEO position as the opposition comes into its own.

Death in the Horoscope: James Kim (Progressions)

December 11, 2006 by

One of my astrological interests has long been determining death in the chart; many other astrologers (and people in general) prefer not to go there. This may have to do with our modern attitude toward death. We are simply not very comfortable with it. And yet, it is a huge part of life, and I feel is best to come to terms with it sooner rather than later. This is one reason why I have been very interested in the chart of James Kim, the Californian who died in Oregon a few weeks ago, while trying to get help for his stranded family. Specifically, I wanted to understand exactly what it was in his chart that would show such an unfortunate fate.

Last week, I looked at potential influences in his natal horoscope, and today, I will look at what was going on in his progressed chart, which is simply the natal horoscope moved forward to a specific point in time. That point will have been the approximate date of death.

James Kim Horoscope - Inner Circle: Natal, Outer Circle: Progressed

We see an odd combination of factors at work in his horoscope, with factors showing bodily danger but also indications of fame. It is fair to say that Kim was never so famous as after his death. Most ominously, we notice that progressed Venus, which rules the natal eighth house of death, opposes the natal Moon in the malefic sixth house. I did not like this Moon much in the natal chart due to its essential weakness and bad location. Regardless of what Kim’s horoscope looked like and where that Moon is actually placed (since we are using only a noon chart), it is clear that a potentially difficult contact to it would be very serious.

We also see that the progressed Sun is entering the highly malefic 12th house – as the Sun is the indicator of life, entering the house of self undoing is not a good thing.

And yet, we also see indications of fame, at least in the noon chart, which seems to be fairly efficacious for this purpose. The Sun is about to sextile the Midheaven, a traditional indicator of fame or enhanced public standing. The progressed Moon is approaching the Midheaven, another hint of renown. I imagine that it can had not died, this would have been a very good year for him in his career. Sadly, it proved otherwise.

Death in the Horoscope: James Kim

December 8, 2006 by

Death of the Pharaoh’s Firstborn Son - Death in James Kim’s Horoscope

James Kim’s death is shocking and tragic, and it stands as a harsh reminder of the dangers of untamed nature. When an astrologer sees a tragically early death such as this one, the inevitable question always arises: Could an early death be located in James Kim’s natal horoscope? The answer is yes, and ancient astrologers spent much of their time doing just that, looking for death in all manner of birth charts. People, and especially children, up to a hundred years ago in the West, and still in many places today, often died unexpectedly and prematurely. As a result, many parents wanted to know whether their children would outlive infancy, or whether a potential wife would survive birth of any children.

Below is James Kim’s horoscope set for Louisville, Kentucky, for noon. I do not have the precise time of James Kim’s birth, and noon charts are quite satisfactory when it comes to public events. However, if you have a reliable source for his time of birth, do let me know (nina@gryphonastrology.com).

James Kim’s Horoscope

Indicators of an Early Death in James Kim’s Horoscope

There are several alarming factors here, none of which would be problematic on its own, but when we get to about five indicators that show health problems or threats to life, we start to worry.

First, we notice that Venus, ruler of the first house of the body, is conjunct the malefic South node, and afflicts (and is afflicted by) the Sun. The Sun, of course, is the Lord of life, and afflictions to it will often show that the individual’s grasp on life is tenuous to some degree. Second, this whole mess opposes Mars in Aquarius in the fifth house of pleasure. Mars in Aquarius is in the detriment of the Sun, so we can see that Mars, a violent planet, afflicts the Sun not only by opposition, but also by negative reception. Mars opposite Sun, especially when combined with other difficult indicators, can give us accident proneness. Aquarius signifies places that are high and wild. Given the fact that James Kim met death in the wilderness, we can see the influence of Mars in Aquarius in full force.

There are also additional indicators specific to this noon chart, so while they are helpful, they must be taken with a grain of salt. Together, however, they are quite suggestive. We notice that the Lord of the ascendant, which is the Lord of life, also rules the eighth house of death. The Moon is in the malefic sixth house; as the secondary indicator of life, this is not good. Finally, we notice that the antiscion of the Sun is conjunct the cusp of the eighth house of death. Yikes!

Prima Hyadum: The Chief of the Weeping Sisters (Pleiades)

I am also concerned about the fact that Saturn, which in this chart is placed in the eighth house of death, is conjunct Prima Hyadum, a malefic fixed star. It is of the nature of Saturn and Mercury, so one interpretation would be death (Saturn in the 8th) from journeys (Mercury). Further, it is said to give “tears, sudden events, violence, fierceness, poisoning, blindness, wounds or injuries to the head by instruments, weapons or fevers, and contradictions of fortune.” Because Saturn moves so slowly, many people have Saturn on this violent fixed star. However, Saturn’s location in the eighth house indicates that Saturn and any associated stars will describe the manner of death.

The next installment in the series will discuss the progressions in James Kim’s horoscope at the time of his death, and the way that the natal chart was triggered to indicate an untimely, tragic death.

Astrology of Current Affairs: New Moon of October 21/22

October 17, 2006 by

New Moon of October 21/22 - Warrior

[The 15th-century picture above proves, by the way, that the soul patch is not a 20th century invention. Though it does look rather hotter when accessorized with a full suit of armor and a sword.]

The new Moon on October 22 (or October 21, depending on where you are) is happening at 28° Libra. We can expect a great deal of talk and communication during the following lunar cycle (about the next 28 days), at least in the United States. The new Moon is happening in an air sign, which rules speech, and it is in the third house of speech. Can you tell it’s election season?

We can expect a continued focus on sexual morality, as with the Mark Foley congressional page scandal, since the new Moon falls in the middle of a conjunction between Venus in Libra and Mars in Libra. Venus is very strong in Libra, because Libra is the sign of its domicile. Mars, however, is very weak in Libra, because it is opposite the sign of its home, which is Aries. Mars is about to move into the sign where it is strongest, which is Scorpio. However, there is a sense that things will get worse before they get better. This probably describes the general political and public climate in the United States right now, which is very fragmented and polarized. The fact that the Moon is applying to Mars, and will translate the light from the Sun to Mars, shows we can expect an unpleasant martial climate in the near future.

As of this writing, there is talk that North Korea is preparing another nuclear test. This would certainly be appropriate, given the heavy Mars influence we can expect. However, I’m optimistic that the tense and confrontational climate, both domestically and internationally, will be resolved harmoniously. This is because the new Moon is disposited by the very strong and conciliatory Venus in Libra. So there is a sense that all is well that ends well.

In the realm of real life, we can expect additional negative news about the American economy. I do not like the looks of the detrimented Saturn in the first house, which represents the nation’s people. Saturn as such symbolizes poverty and want, and in detriment shows a particularly nasty version thereof. Saturn squares Mercury, which rules the second house of finances. Saturn also rules oil, because oil is black, and is found underground. Oil prices likely will start to climb again during this period, afflicting the nation’s resources.

Astrology of Current Affairs: November 7th U.S. elections and Jupiter square Saturn

October 16, 2006 by

November 7th U.S. elections and Jupiter square Saturn - Victory

The Jupiter-Saturn cycle is a very powerful indicator of political activity in the world. It has a strong correlation with important events in the United States, and this upcoming midterm election (on the November 7, 2006) is no exception. Jupiter and Saturn will square each other on October 25, less than two weeks before election Day in the United States. Jupiter and Saturn conjunct each other every 20 years, an event known as the Great Conjunction. Five years after the Great Conjunction, Jupiter and Saturn form a square aspect, five years after that, they oppose each other, and five years after the opposition, they square each other again. In the five years following, they form another Great Conjunction.

The Great Conjunction is considered as a time of emerging potentials that will influence the next 20 years. At approximately five-year points, at the squares and at the opposition, those potentials are tested and form crisis points where the potentials can evolve in different directions. This is probably too theoretical, so consider that the last Great Conjunction occurred in May of 2000. This helped to usher in an era of Republican rule and the general movement in the direction of conservatism in the United States. We are now at the approximately 5 year mark, at which point we are experiencing the first square that happens after the Great Conjunction. The square shows a moment of great tension, and we will see whether the Republican movement can hold onto power or not.

At the moment, it looks as though the Republican majorities in Congress are imperiled. The races are very close between Democrats and Republicans, because it is clear that whoever wins will have a very powerful impact on shaping the future of the United States, perhaps more than usual. There is an overall sense that the country is at a crossroads, and that it is time to make serious decisions about major issues like the economy, the war in Iraq, and the increasingly serious effects of global warming.

Here is the horoscope for the Jupiter- Saturn square on October 25, 2006 set for Washington, DC:

November 7th U.S. elections and Jupiter square Saturn

To understand what the placements in in this chart mean, we have to turn to another horoscope, that of the Great Conjunction prior to the United States Declaration of Independence in 1776. You can read more in this post on that horoscope’s meaning in light of the 9/11 attacks. For our purposes here, we know that Saturn rules the 10th house of the ruling party in the 1762 Great Conjunction. The Sun rules the opposite house of challengers to the ruling party.

So in the chart for October 25, 2006, Saturn will rule the Republican Party, and the Sun will rule the Democrats. How is Saturn? Not good. Saturn is in its detriment in Leo in the eighth house of death. Further, Leo is ruled by the Sun, which represents the Democratic Party. So the Republicans are in the Democrats’ power. The Sun is somewhat better off, having just left Libra, the sign of its fall. At 2° Scorpio, the Sun is Peregrine, thus lacking any dignity or debility. Peregrine is not great, but it is rather better than being in detriment like Saturn. So based on this, we see the Democrats have an advantage.

We also want to look at the Rulerships in the October 25 chart standing alone. Here, the Republicans are shown by the 10th house ruler of Venus in Scorpio which is combust, a fancy word for being too close to the burning rays of the Sun. This is an extremely serious debility for a planet. The Sun is the natural representative of the King, here meaning the United States president, George W. Bush. So the Republicans’ proximity to Bush is harming them; the newspapers have reported as much, showing that not many of the candidates in this fall’s elections want to be seen with Bush, whose public approval ratings are rather low.

The Democrats are shown by the fourth house ruler, Mars in Scorpio. In the early degrees of Scorpio, Mars is incredibly strong, ruling all of the major dignities. If we were to show the contrast between Venus and Mars’s strength, we would say that Venus has a strength of -5, while Mars has a strength of 11. These numbers don’t mean anything, but they do serve to illustrate the great disparity between the two planets in his horoscope. And that’s not even taking combustion into account, which would make Venus about -10 in terms of overall strength. This testimony, too, shows that the Democrats have an advantage.

However, the chart is not very clear cut. In charts where we are curious about the will of the people, such as charts preceding elections, we have to look at the Moon, the significator of the common folk. The Moon is in Sagittarius, in the 12th house. At 10° of Sagittarius, the Moon has some small amount of regard for Venus, and a bit more regard for the Sun. So the people seem to prefer the Democrats, at least slightly. However, the Moon is in the malefic and cadent 12th house, from where it cannot act. It will be very difficult for both parties to get their voters to the polls. The Moon will make only one aspect in its trek through the sign of Sagittarius. That aspect is a trine to Saturn in Leo in about 13°. Given that it will be 13 days between the square and the election on November 7, one wonders if the Republicans will not go home with a majority after all is said and done. Very much will depend on the ability of the Democrats to get out the vote this November 7.
