Unwilling Traveler - Free Astrology Readings: Horary Astrology – “Can I Stay Where I Am?”

Horary Astrology Question:

I’m a college student and I’m hopefully getting a job that I actually want in October but not completely sure. If I can’t, I have to go live with my Mom in a town where I would know no one. I’ve fallen in love with this town and I would like to know if I’m going to be able to somehow make ends meet and stick it here.

Nina Gryphon:

Dear K.,

I know how you must feel; I have a few places in the world where I would like to live, but our desires and reality are not always the same thing. I cast a horary astrological chart for the time of your question, and the horoscope for that is below:

Horary Astrology Horoscope - Free Astrology Readings: Horary Astrology – “Can I Stay Where I Am?”

I’m afraid that you may not be able to stay where you are. The Lord of the first house of self, Mars, is about to change signs, which is one testimony of an impending move. The fact that Mars is about to move into the sign of its fall, Cancer, makes me think that you are going to be in a situation you don’t like. The Moon, your co-significator, is in the double sign Pisces, which also is a hint that you may not be able to stay were you want.

This makes me wonder about the job that you are expecting. Mercury, ruler of the 10th house of work, is in the detriment of Mars, and will shortly trine Mars. If Mercury was not so badly disposed toward Mars, I would say you will get the job. However, because the job seems to dislike you, you will either not get the job, or the job will simply not be very good and you will not keep it.

Either way, as far as the job goes, good riddance. The 10th house cusp of career is extremely afflicted, telling us that there is something seriously wrong with this job. Saturn is on the 10th house cusp, as is the South node, both of which are highly malefic influences, and you give discouraging testimony regarding this job prospect.

Horary Astrology: Free Reading – “Will I Make It in Show Business?”

August 24, 2007 by

Free Reading - Caged Bird

Horary Question:

My entire life people I have met have been amazingly drawn to me. Strangers I’ve spoken to have always gazed at me with the same wide-eyed awe and uttered “You are going to be so famous” or “You are going to really make it”. The thing is, I just turned 21 and yet I have only flirted with the smallest outskirts of fame. I’ve shot for a few magazines, performed in many theater productions, been in TV and on commercials. I’ve met with all the right people who can get me there…yet it seems I am still here, stuck. What do you see?

Should I just give up and accept my life as an above-average looking person, or continue to charge forth towards the goal I want? I could care less about fame or fortune, I just want to act in TV. I had a Tarot reading about two months ago regarding this, and it said that I am exactly where I need to be, despite me feeling extreme doubts. Though if I am where I need to be (my city is NOT a market for my dreams), why has nothing happened?

Nina Gryphon:

Dear B.,

Thank you for writing to me. I can certainly understand your frustration and impatience, especially since you don’t have forever to launch your career, and time is of the essence. Nowadays, people seem to get started in show business when they’re still in the single-digit years! I cast a horary chart for the time of your question:

Free Reading - Will I Make it in Show Business?

Because you are curious about your career and eventual success, we have to look at the 10th house of career, honor, and fame. In this horoscope, the 10th house is ruled by Moon in Capricorn in the third house. The Moon is avoid of course, meaning that it will not make major aspects in its current sign. None of these indications are particularly positive; the Moon is in the sign of its detriment, it is in a cadent house, and other planets are not assisting it by aspect or reception. This does not bode terribly well for your show business fame.

If we look at the ruler of the first house, which represents you, we get Venus in Leo retrograde in the 10th house. Venus is not terribly strong in Leo, and because it is retrograde, there is a sense that you feel you’re moving backward instead of forward in your career. Unfortunately, we don’t really see any positive breaks happening for Venus in the near future. I suspect that your acting career might not take you as far as you would like.

I think you can definitely act, and you should be able to get some gigs, but I just don’t think it’s going to lead to the kind of success you’re envisioning. This is because Jupiter, which is very strong in its own sign of Sagittarius, rules the fifth house of acting and plays. Still, Jupiter is not really linked to the Moon, which represents your success.

However, I am encouraged to see the benefic and protective star Spica conjunct the ascendant; we see that even though you may not attain your heart’s desire, you will be taken care of and things will turn out okay for you. I looked around the chart to see possible sources of success for you. I think you should continue to pursue acting, as indicated by the strong Jupiter, but also think about creating a career for yourself that will sustain you even as you get older. Hopefully, you are getting a decent education, which is governed by Mercury in the 11th house, ruling the ninth house of higher education. Mercury is quite strong, so this is one possible avenue. The ninth house also rules travel and foreign countries, so you could think about a career which involves lots of travel (such as sales, where it never hurts to be attractive), short distance or long distance.

Free Astrology Advice: Horary Question – When Will I Get Into University?

March 5, 2007 by

Horary Question:

When will I get into a university? Luck slips me by whenever I am trying to get admission. For example I sat for entrance examination to two schools & when the results where out I was about 3 marks away from the cut-off. All efforts to get me admitted failed, but later I learned that those who were 5 marks away from the cut-off were admitted. The same thing happened when I was seeking admission into secondary college but I tried my best in these examinations.

Nina Gryphon:

Dear T.,

How unfondly I think of all the exams I have had to take in my life, all of them progressively becoming more and more critical to future success. I certainly sympathize with your anguish about getting into university. I cast a horary chart for the time that I understood your question. The horary chart is below:

We will need to look at two possible indicators. One, we will see whether we have any applying aspect between the ninth house and any of your significators, as the ninth house indicates institutions of higher knowledge. We will also want to look at the quality of the 10th house, showing your results on any future exams.

You are symbolized by Mercury, which is in the sixth house and its retrograde. You’re not doing well, and I assume that Mercury’s being retrograde shows you going back to take the exam again. I do not know if this is possible in your school system, but I would imagine so. The ninth house is ruled by Mars, so we would hope to either have Mercury aspect Mars or the Moon, which is your co-significator. Mercury will not aspect Mars, but the Moon has just separated from a trine to Mars. I would expect that this means that either you were just very recently offered admission, or will be soon. Alternatively, we would think that you have gotten as close as possible to getting into university.

So this method is inconclusive, and we will look at the quality of Mercury, ruler of your 10th house (yes, it also represents you, but not in this part of our ingrained) determine whether your marks will be good. Since Mercury has recently left its detriment and fall in Pisces, we see that your most recent marks were not good enough. However, I do like the fact that Mercury is retrograde in back into Aquarius, or at least it is not so afflicted as in Pisces. This suggests that another try at the examinations will give you better marks, nothing stellar, but presumably enough to get into the university.

Free Astrology Advice: Horary Astrology – Should I Be an Astrologer or Go Into Religion?

February 2, 2007 by

The Astronomer

Horary Question:

Should I become an astrologer, or would I be better off returning to school for religious studies? In March of this past year, I withdrew from my (academically oriented) master’s program in religious studies, as it was uninspiring and feeling like a bad fit for me. I have been studying astrology on my own for the past few years and am wondering if I should pursue this more professionally (after further studies). However, I have also been considering returning to school to do religious studies from a different approach, perhaps by earning an master’s of divinity degree.

I am wondering which would be ultimately more fulfilling to me, personally and financially. I have some concern about my ability to handle returning to school since I have some ongoing health issues, but the program I’m looking at does appeal enough to consider it. I want to focus on spirituality and help others with my efforts; I’m also not looking to get rich, but do need to make some money from whatever I choose. I’m wondering if you might have insights into which path would work out better for me.

Nina Gryphon:

Dear L.,

Yours is an interesting question, and I certainly would never anticipate seeing this exact dilemma! Most people I know make a very distinct division between religion and astrology, seeing the two of them as mutually exclusive. I believe this is unfortunate, as I personally believe that astrology is really just a practical application of the principles in religion, but I understand this is a highly heterodox view.

I cast a horoscope for your question, a method known as horary astrology, wearing the horoscope for the time of the question contains the answer. Readers can learn more about this ancient method in “Horary Astrology: What Is It?,” an article I wrote. The horoscope for your horary question is below:

Astrology or Religious Studies

Since you are deciding between two courses of action, we have to identify what planets will symbolize each path. Both astrology and religion are ruled by the ninth house, as they are both forms of higher knowledge. So we cannot give each of them a different house. The planet traditionally ruling astrology is Mercury, while Jupiter is the planet assigned to religion. So first, we will look at the conditions of each of these planets, and see which one is more auspicious.

Both planets are Peregrine, meaning that they are not in essential dignity or debility. This means that neither is particularly strong or weak. Bonatti said that Peregrine planets are neither good nor evil, but they tend toward evil, because they have no direction, and are easily swayed. Thus far, neither looks particularly appealing. Jupiter is in the 11th house, the house of its joy, so it seems that this is a career that is more comfortable for you in some way. However, Jupiter is also about to square a rather malefic Saturn in its detriment. Saturn rules the second house of money, so it may be that your religious career runs into funding difficulties.

Now, this is not astrologically motivated, but I would have to warn you that as an astrologer, it is unlikely you will make as much money as you need. The vast majority of people who make a lot of money as astrologers in the West are usually not astrologers at all, or particularly competent ones. They are the ones putting out the annual almanacs, daily horoscopes, and whatnot, and have entire gigantic franchises with their names on them. Most of us have day jobs that sustain us.

When I look at the 10th house, which shows money from your knowledge, I see a very mixed picture. On the one hand, that house is ruled by Venus in Libra, which approaches the powerful 10th house angle. This is a positive testimony for your finances, but just inside that 10th house we have two highly malefic planets, the Sun and Mars positioned very weakly. This combination of factors tells me that whichever path you choose, you’ll have to go through a long period of want, and only makes decent money much later.

The important thing is that you do not have to choose, and you can always incorporate astrological techniques into any counseling career. It sounds as though you could do very well as a licensed therapist, using your spiritual and astrological understanding to help your clients. The key is to understand that you’re not really making an either/or decision here, but rather unique to find out how best to integrate your interests into a career that will also be financially rewarding.
