Horary Astrology Question:

I live in Orlando, Florida. He lives in Australia. We’ve been emailing for two years and he plans to fly to the States so we can meet. There are mutually strong feelings freely confessed. And it’s lasted a year with romantic feelings; 2 years as great friends online. I know he’s sincere. He knows I am, too. Neither of us is a player. I’m 8 years older. My gut says he’s the one. What do you see? When we meet we’ll have to know from that because it’s not a trip easily afforded to have many occasions to determine the possibilities.

—A.

Nina Gryphon:

Dear A.,

Thank you for writing to me. I cast a horary chart for the time of your question:

ishetheone1 Free Astrology Readings: Horary Astrology – “Will We Marry and Be Happy?”

First, let’s take a look at what is going on with him. He is ruled by your seventh house of partners, and its ruler, Mars in Gemini. His co-ruler, the Sun, represents his urge to marry or his level of physical attraction to you. With Mars in your second house, he is primarily interested in your high opinion of him. This is not quite the same thing as him being head over heels in love with you, but he obviously does care how you feel about him.

The Sun is a little bit more problematic here; because it is in Virgo, it is in the fall of Venus, your main significator. Could it be that you’re not quite getting the sheer animal attraction from him that would be appropriate at this stage in a relationship? Or perhaps he has just not expressed an interest in a long-term committed relationship?

The interesting thing is that both of his planets are in strong dignities of Mercury, which rules the second and sixth houses in the horoscope (his eighth and 12th houses). Without knowing more about your relationship, I wouldn’t gamble on what these houses represent. There may be a possibility he is interested in your money, but as I mentioned above, very often this can just mean that he is interested in your approval or high opinion of him. Both of these are ruled by your second house.

I don’t like the fact that the Sun is in the turned 12th house of secrets. This doesn’t mean that he has some kind of scandalous secret life or anything, but it’s not a placement but I like to see in relationship questions, as I believe that everything should be out in the open.

You are definitely attracted to him, and are certainly hot to trot as far as marriage goes. This is because your first house ruler, Venus, is in the sign of the Sun, and the Sun rules him as animal Man, and also it rules the Arabian Part of Marriage at 9° Leo. I am a little bit puzzled by the placement of the Moon, which seems to indicate some kind of sadness. The Moon is conjunct Vindemiatrix, which represents sorrow or separation. The Moon is also in the fall of the Sun (him as animal Man and marriage), and the detriment of Mars, his main significator. Has there been some kind of problem with him recently? It’s like your head wants one thing and your heart another.

Since you’re asking about marriage, I would want to see an applying aspect between your planets and his. The only applying aspect is the upcoming opposition between the antiscion of the Sun at 9.59° Aries and the Moon at 8° Libra. Oppositions represent breakups or regret, which would tell us that this romance may not lead to marriage. Again, the fact that this is happening in his 12th house, makes me wonder if you have all the information in this situation.

Mars in Cancer: Astrology & Planet Positions of Mars Retrograde

September 11, 2007 by

sailorsonchoppysea Mars in Cancer: Astrology & Planet Positions of Mars Retrograde

Mars will enter Cancer on September 29, 2007, which is not a positive planetary event. In Cancer, Mars is in the sign of its fall, and therefore is particularly malefic. The ancient astrologers specifically looked for times when Mars in Cancer conjoined Saturn, as both planets were then at their most malefic, and their conjunction could only bode ill.

Mars is going to be in Cancer for a long time this year, as it turns retrograde at 12° Cancer on November 15. This means that Mars will be moving very slowly through the rest of 2007, and will have to be dealt with cautiously during this entire time (and into 2008).

Electional Astrology with Mars in Cancer

If Mars rules anything important in your natal horoscope, it may be best to avoid making major moves while it is passing through Cancer, and ideally throughout the time of its retrogradation. For example, if Mars rules your second house of money, making major financial decisions during this time is rather more risky than we would like.

If you absolutely must act, try to find dates when Mars is aspecting benefic planets, or just throw your hands up and call a professional astrologer.

The same goes for Mars-related activities, such as sporting events, warfare, surgery in general, and anything physically invasive.

Mars in Cancer in the Natal Horoscope

Generally, Mars in Cancer will not be a force for good in the natal horoscope, due to its weak placement in that sign. If Mars happens to be conjunct an eminent fixed star, such as in the horoscope of Roger Federer, then its malefic nature is much diminished (though the tendency to shed tears upon winning tennis tournaments is not). However, in general, Mars in Cancer is going to be tough to deal with.

As a different, more difficult example of Mars in Cancer, we can look at the natal horoscope of British poet laureate Robert Southey, who, after a distinguished poetic career, lost his mind and thereafter died. While there is much more to be said about his horoscope, note the Mars in Cancer on the midheaven (ruling his 3rd house of writing, and indicating his prolific career, which led to about 55 books), sextile Mercury in Virgo. Mercury represents the rational mind, so we see his sanity afflicted by his urge for fast and furious (Cancer is a cardinal sign, and therefore moves very quickly) creative output.

Horary Astrology: Free Reading – “Will He Come Back?”

Horary Astrology Question:

Will and I were in a serious relationship. We lived together and had just started planning our wedding. On Tuesday we were looking at rings, on Wednesday he left a note saying how much he loved me. On Thursday, he packed up his stuff and left while I was still at work. No note, no explanation, and he won’t answer my calls.

—A.

Nina Gryphon:

Dear A.,

Thank you for writing to me. I cast a horary chart for the time of your question:

willhecomebackwhygone Horary Astrology: Free Reading – “Will He Come Back?”

You are symbolized by the ruler of the first house, Mars, while your feelings are symbolized by the Moon. Will is symbolized by Venus, ruler of your seventh house of partners, and his need to partner up with someone is shown by the Sun. Examining these planets will give us a sense of how you feel about him and vice versa, and whether a reconciliation is possible.

The nice thing about horary astrology is that it gives us a good snapshot of the situation, rather than just making a prediction. I suspect that Will is not as deeply interested in you as you are in him. Neither of his planets, Venus or the Sun, are in signs ruled by your planets, Mars and the Moon. However, the Sun, that part of him which wants to find a partner, is very interested in marriage. The Arabian Part of Marriage falls at 4° Gemini, and so is ruled by Mercury. With the Sun in Virgo, we see that he is very much interested in marriage; Mercury is the ruler of Virgo by sign and by exaltation.

This is probably why he left; he likes the idea of marriage, but he just doesn’t have the deep feelings for you to make it happen. Unfortunately, you really do care about him deeply on an emotional level, as we see that the Moon, significator of your emotions, is in Taurus, where it is ruled by Venus. Your main planet, Mars, is very interested in Mercury: you definitely want marriage badly.

I am concerned that he is not going to come back, since I just do not see the emotional interest on his side that would enable a relationship. We do see an applying sextile aspect between Venus and Mars, your and his main significators. However, neither of those planets is very interested in the other — there probably will be some contact with him in the near future, but I do not expected to lead to reconciliation.

The fact that the Moon is conjunct the malefic fixed star Alcyone is not good either; it shows occasion for regret or sadness. Combined with the fact that the Moon is void of course, I wouldn’t expect any major new developments in the situation. The good news is that you will shortly get over this difficult state, as the Moon leaves Taurus and enters Gemini.

Gryphon Astrology News

September 6, 2007 by

readingnewsinartistsstudio Gryphon Astrology News

Dear Friends,

Just thought I’d give you a quick update on what’s new with Gryphon Astrology, because there is lots to tell.

1. As you may have noticed, the Gryphon Astrology website has undergone a much-needed overhaul. There are lots of new articles for your perusal, and it’s all much better organized. It was fortuitously finished while the Sun was in Leo and Mercury was in Virgo, with the Moon about to conjoin Jupiter in Sagittarius, which is nice.

2. Gryphon Astrology now has its very own email astrology newsletter, published quarterly (so it won’t clutter up your inbox!). The astrology newsletter will include horoscopes from my archives (not ones previously published on the blog), geographically extensive weather forecasts, book reviews, games, and lots more fun astro-stuff that is not on the weblog. You can subscribe by clicking the Newsletter link on the Gryphon Astrology website. The first issue will be out in a couple of weeks, when the Sun is in 0 degrees Libra.

3. Sneak preview #1: This blog will be moving to the gryphonastrology.com domain in the near future, so it’s all under one roof. Don’t change your links/bookmarks yet, but when the blog does move, there will be a permanent message on this blog with the updated URL.

Also, as a way of belatedly thanking all those kind people who linked to this blog over the last year, I would like to link back to your blog/site/homepage. Once this blog is moved to its new home, please email me with your URL so I know who you are, and I can reciprocate by linking back to you on the new blog. I have been bad about keeping my link list up to date, but I’ll be better, I promise.

4. Sneak preview #2: At the end of this month or early October, I will restart the astrology radio shows, though probably without Bernhard, who is industriously (yes, he has Virgo in his chart) working on his new astrology software deep in the forests of Germany.

Happy reading!

Horary Astrology: Missing Child – Why Does Daughter Keep Running Away?”

September 6, 2007 by

thebohemian Horary Astrology: Missing Child Why Does Daughter Keep Running Away?”

Horary Question:

My close friend’s 13-1/2 yr old daughter has run away from home for the second time (1st time 8/2; “found” by police 8/19 hiding in a closet at a friend’s home & returned to mother that day; then she ran away again 8/24 and is still “missing”) and as happened during her first runaway attempt, is evidently living with individuals who have no problem “hiding” a minor child!

Missing child police reports, etc. have been filed by the mother. This child is also not attending school, so truancy is now an additional issue. She is for all intents and purposes 100% living “underground”. Of course the mother is beside herself. This child does not come from an abusive environment, lack for much in life, etc. Truly a sad, sad situation. What can you see happening in this situation? Will she return? Why are the police so lax in seemingly all they do with this case? What about the individuals who are certainly breaking the law by harboring a runaway minor child?

I will direct the mother to read this to (hopefully) provide some comfort to her in this very unfortunate situation.

—C.

Nina Gryphon:

Dear C.

As always, thank you for writing to me. What a strange situation; I would expect the girl to have told the mother her reason for running away. Since we have very little information, I will try to figure it out from the horoscope. I cast a horary chart for the time I understood your question:

missingchild Horary Astrology: Missing Child Why Does Daughter Keep Running Away?”

Since the mother is a close friend of yours, we would give her the 11th house of friends, and its ruler, the Sun in Virgo. Her runaway child is shown by your friend’s 5th house of children, and its ruler, Mars in Gemini.

First, let’s take a look at when the missing child will return: the Sun will square Mars at 24 degrees of their respective signs, so it will be in 11 or 12 somethings. The applying planet (the Sun) is in a cadent house, so we would likely see this as days. There is the possibility we are looking at hours, but days seems more likely given how long the girl has been gone. So she will be back in just under two weeks. Will it be for good? I’m not convinced; with mutable signs dominating the chart, ther may be a bit more of this back and forth lifestyle.

Second, let’s try to figure out why she is running away. With Mars in the sign of Mercury and detriment of Jupiter, she either really likes what Mercury represents or hates whatever Jupiter represents. Mercury rules the missing child’s 11th house of friends, so this may be one reason she’s running away. Jupiter rules her 2nd, 4th, and 5th houses, so it could be she simply doesn’t like being at home, or potentially has some self-esteem issues (2nd house). But really, why not just ask her, and maybe get a therapist to talk to her?

Third, why are the police not doing anything? They don’t want to deal with it, especially after having already done their duty once. The police are represented by the 10th house of authority, and its ruler, Mercury. Mercury is in the fall of the Sun (the mom) and the detriment of Mars (the daughter); it’s not that they don’t care. Rather, they are intentionally not pursuing this. They certainly could do so; Mercury is powerfully placed in the first house. But they had already done so once, and don’t want to get involved again. Note how Mercury was recently in its own sign and exaltation, Virgo – in the recent past, the police were doing their policing, as they should have. But they are onto other things, and couldn’t be bothered, since there seems to be no danger to the child.

Fourth, why are these people harboring her? Without knowing her exact relationship to these people, it’s difficult to say. If they are just anybody to her (not friends, for example), we would take them to be shown by Venus in Leo. Since Mars has recently sextiled Venus, this is quite possible. If this is the case, the people with whom she is staying are not bad people. Venus is in its own term, which lends some amount of character to the people involved. Which leads me to believe that she has told them a compelling story – true or not – about why she has run away.

Steve Fossett: Horary Astrology of Missing People

September 5, 2007 by

daedalusicarus Steve Fossett: Horary Astrology of Missing People

The sudden disappearance of multi-millionaire record-setting aviator Steve Fossett has raised a lot of questions as to his whereabouts. Though searches for Fossett have been going on for days, no sign of him or his small airplane has been found. Ironically, Fossett has cheated death on riskier occassions, during his daredevil flight expeditions.

Horary Astrology Chart – Steve Fossett

As frequent readers of this blog know, I am very interested in the astrology of missing persons. Astrological techniques are effective to determine a person’s whereabouts and their condition. Though I rarely do this, I felt moved to use horary astrology to ask: “Is Steve Fossett dead or alive?” This horoscope is below:

stevefossettalive Steve Fossett: Horary Astrology of Missing People

Unfortunately, I fear the worst. Fossett is symbolized by the ruler of the 7th house of other people in general, Venus. Venus is right on the cusp of the turned 4th house, which rules all endings, and which seems to be very common in horoscopes having to do with missing persons. Venus’s position in itself, however, is not a complete testimony of death. The famed astrologer, William Lilly, says that a significator’s location in the 4th house only indicates death when there has been a long absence, the person was lost in remote parts, and/or there is strong external evidence pointing to death. Even though all of these factors are in play in Fossett’s case, I feel that we need corroborating evidence to be certain.

We do not have a separating aspect between the ruler of the radical or turned 8th houses of death, which would be the most obvious evidence. However, we do see that Venus has recently sextiled Mars in Gemini in the 8th house of death, and the Moon, also in the 8th house, has translated the light between Venus and Mars, recreating the aspect. This is strong evidence pointing to a violent death, since Mars rules violence, and it is in the air sign Gemini. Further, Mars rules the malefic 6th house (or the turned 12th house, which is just as bad). The Moon’s upcoming and last aspect in Gemini will be a square to Mercury, ruler of the 8th house. The Moon rules all missing things, especially live ones (animals and people). It doesn’t look good for Fossett.

Where is Steve Fossett?

With his significator, Venus, in the 10th house in Leo, our authorities tell us that this means he is on high ground (at the very top of the chart), in a place of wild beasts, the desert, steep and rocky terrain that is likely quite wild and inaccessible. No wonder he has not yet been found!

“Last Seen” Horoscope for Steve Fossett

My astrology contact in the Netherlands, Karin Verhoeve, emailed me this morning with her analysis of the situation. Karin cast a chart for the time and place that Fossett was last seen, and drew the conclusion that he died. I also looked at the horoscope, and to me, it is not nearly as terrible-looking as some other “missing persons” charts, though the most notable aspect is the immediate Venus sextile to Mars, which can never be too good.

Horary Astrology: Free Reading – “Will I Get a Ph.D. Degree, and When?”

littleschoolgirl Horary Astrology: Free Reading – “Will I Get a Ph.D. Degree, and When?”

Horary Astrology Question:

After completing my MBA in 2001, I applied to a number of universities over the years to pursue a Ph.D. degree but, at best, I was on a waiting list. I have always felt this is something I need to attain. I am currently pursuing an industry designation but I still desire a higher academic education.

—A.

Nina Gryphon:

Dear A.,

Thank you for writing to me. I cast a horary chart for the time of your question:

getphd Horary Astrology: Free Reading – “Will I Get a Ph.D. Degree, and When?”

Your education is signified by the ninth house, which rules higher knowledge and advanced learning. The ninth house is ruled by Venus, which is retrograde in the 12th house, in Leo. Venus is not terribly strong in Leo, and its retrogradation is also an affliction. The 12th house location is considered very weak as well, as the 12th house is malefic. Venus is also applying to a sextile with Mars, which is not considered tremendously helpful, as Mars is a malefic planet.

Perhaps going for your Ph.D. may not be the best idea, given the extent of Venus’s afflictions. But let’s see whether you will end up going for the degree anyway. Mercury is your significator, as it rules your first house of the self. Mercury is very strong, because it is in Virgo, the sign of its domicile and exaltation. However, Mercury is in the fall of Venus, showing your disappointment with getting the Ph.D. admission in the past.

Ideally, I would want to see an aspect between Mercury and Venus, indicating you obtaining the degree. However, we also note that both of your significators; Mercury and the Moon, will enter sign is ruled by Venus (ruler of higher education in this chart), so there is a possibility of attaining your Ph.D. in nine or 10 years. However, without a direct aspect between our two main planets, I think this is a remote possibility, instead indicating your wanting to return to school at that time.

Horary Astrology: Free Reading – “When Is the Best Time for My Plastic Surgery?”

August 30, 2007 by

spanishbeauty Horary Astrology: Free Reading – “When Is the Best Time for My Plastic Surgery?”

Horary Astrology Question:

I want to do my breast augmentation and nose surgery this year; what is a good day or month?

—D.

Nina Gryphon:

Dear D.,

Thank you for writing to me. I cast a horary chart for the time of your question:

besttimeforplasticsurgery Horary Astrology: Free Reading – “When Is the Best Time for My Plastic Surgery?”

This is a relatively simple question. To answer it, we will need to find the best time for the planet that represents you or the thing that you want to accomplish. This is not a true electional reading, which takes more time (and requires your natal chart as well) natal, but will often give us the best time and date down to the minute, if we wish. However, as a broad indicator of the best time to act, horary astrology can be quite helpful.

In this horoscope, you are represented by Venus, ruler of the first house of self. This is especially accurate because you are getting surgery done on your face, which is ruled by the first house. The breasts are ruled by the fourth house, so we will want to take a quick look at that as well. However, Venus is going to be our prime indicator for both surgeries.

Venus is retrograde at the moment, which is considered an affliction for a planet, because it is temporarily traveling in the opposite direction that it normally does. It will go direct again at 16° of Leo, which is in about 2°. This means that you should wait about two months, and then you can have your surgery whenever you want this year.

If we really want to split hairs, we can look at what Saturn is doing, as it rules the fourth house of breasts. Saturn is about to move into Virgo in about half a degree, where it is rather stronger than in Leo, its current sign. So you could potentially have your breast surgery as soon as two weeks from now. However, to be on the safe side, I would suggest that you wait two months before doing either surgery. Even though plastic surgery is very routine, it is not risk-free, and doctors do mess it up. I certainly do enough electional readings for plastic surgery “fix it” procedures, where the doctor got it wrong the first time.

Learn Astrology: Saturn Problems, and How to Fix Them

August 30, 2007 by

monasterygraveyardinsnow Learn Astrology: Saturn Problems, and How to Fix Them

Saturn is probably blamed for more problems than any other planet; this is one of the first things we hear about when learning astrology. If I had a dollar for every e-mail or comment I get having to do with Saturn problems, I would be the world’s richest astrologer. And, Saturn is traditionally known as the Great Malefic, indicating that our ancestors really disliked Saturn as well. The malign influence of Saturn has been blamed for everything from bad teeth to heartbreak, even old age and death.

So is there some way to fix our Saturn problems, so that we can avoid these problems once and for all? It turns out that people have been thinking about exactly this problem for centuries, and more like millennia. Below is a list of suggestions I found in traditional texts for dealing with Saturn issues:

1. Saturn is good to his own kind. Therefore, if you have been dealing with Saturnian problems, the key is to become more Saturnian yourself. Embrace a life of isolated contemplation (we didn’t say this would be easy!); move to a secluded mountain top. Spend a lot of time alone, and wear lots of black. The Renaissance philosopher Marsilio Ficino called this “divine contemplation.”

2. Saturn will have his due; make some space in your life for him. Most often, our Saturn problems arise from not having enough positive Saturnian influence in your life. Boundaries, meditation and contemplation, seriousness, and responsibility are all Saturnian. Make every Saturday (Saturn’s day) your day of meditation and retreat. Ficino called this “the day of Saturn unfit for action in peace or war but fit for contemplation and for beseeching divine patronage on that same day against dangers.” Brush your teeth and take responsibility for yourself. Restrict harmful things in your life. Go on a healthy diet.

3. Jupiter is an antidote to Saturn. Jupiter is the Great Benefic, and therefore is the only planet that can take on Saturn. Jupiter also governs spiritual contemplation, but more specifically, faith and hope. Jupiter rules positive thinking, and charity. If you feel you’re not getting enough from life, perhaps you should look into giving more yourself.

How have you coped with Saturn problems?

Astrology – Map of the Planets: Mercury in Libra, September 5, 2007

August 29, 2007 by

mercury Astrology – Map of the Planets: Mercury in Libra, September 5, 2007

Mercury will enter Libra on September 5th, where it is not nearly as strong as in Virgo. Libra is a decent sign for Mercury, as Mercury is in its own triplicity in Libra by night. However, Mercury’s strength in Libra cannot compare with Virgo, as Virgo is the best possible sign for Mercury, since Virgo is the sign where Mercury is in its own house and exaltation.

Mercury does especially well in two of the mutable signs; Gemini and Virgo. The changeability of Mercury is very much in keeping with the changeable nature of the double signs. Overall, Mercury tends to do better in the air signs, as they represent the intellect, which Mercury is strongly associated with, and are dynamic enough to satisfy Mercury’s need for change.

Electional Astrology and Mercury in Libra

If you are planning to do anything Mercury related, such as traveling, sending important letters or messages, buying or selling, Mercury’s travel through Libra is a fine time to do so, though starting your activities at night would be more auspicious. As I mentioned, this is because Mercury rules the night triplicity of Libra. In particular, you may want to look at times when Mercury is conjunct the fixed star Spica, and extremely benefic and protective fixed star. This happens on September 21 and 22nd this year.

In particular, Mercury will sextile Jupiter in Sagittarius on September 13, after which it will sextile Venus in Leo on the 17th, and then it will trine Mars in Gemini on September 26. All other things being equal, the sextile to Venus is probably the most auspicious of these aspects. Jupiter is the Great Benefic, and therefore is normally very positive, but its location in Sagittarius means that it is in the detriment of Mercury, and so Jupiter is not inclined to help Mercury much.
