Learn Astrology: The South Node in Your Horoscope

Astrology of the Nodes - South Node and its Meaning - Illustrated by Fall of Phaeton

The South Node is a respectable supporting player in all forms of astrology (horary, natal, or mundane), though its use and meaning is sometimes fuzzy. First, let’s talk about what the South node actually is, astronomically speaking. As the Moon circles the earth, it doesn’t do so in a straight line, it sort of bobs up and down as it travels, above and below the ecliptic (the apparent path of the Sun). The point at which the Moon moves upward through the ecliptic is the North node. The point in the ecliptic at which the Moon will dip down is the South node.

The Moon thus passes through the ecliptic twice in its monthly orbit. Since the Moon’s trajectory changes each month, it intersects the ecliptic at different points each time (this is the nodal cycle which takes 18.6 years), which is why the nodes appear to travel – or precess – in the horoscope.

This should give you an idea of why the South node is considered malefic; it is the point at which the Moon moves down through the ecliptic. Downward motion is considered bad, from a symbolic point of view. We moved down from Spirit into body, thereby losing some of our intrinsic spiritual qualities, cloaked as they are by gross matter. Similarly, planets that can join the South node are considered minimized in some way. If we have Venus in Libra conjunct the South node, some of that benefic Venusian influence will be lost. If Venus is in Aries, the sign of its detriment, and it is conjunct the South node, Venus now has less power to do harm.

Sometimes people wonder why the South node doesn’t make malefic planets even more harmful. This is because the South node is not a “thing,” like a harmful planet or star. The South node is an abstract point, so it’s best to think of it as a hole into which planets fall when they conjunct the South node. Their influence, for better or for worse, is now diminished.

It is impossible for the South node to cast aspects to anything. For an object to cast aspects, it has to be a thing. So abstract points like the nodes do not qualify. The only exception to this general rule seem to be the fixed stars, perhaps because they are so small and plentiful, and they don’t seem to work by much more than a conjunction. The nodes are similar, in that only a close conjunction seems to have an effect.

Some people claim that in the natal horoscope, the South node indicates our past lives. An interesting theory, though of course unverifiable. A more concrete application would be looking at any close conjunctions to the South node, and viewing the affected planet as made somewhat weaker in influence.

Free Astrology Readings: Horary Astrology – “Will My Son & I Reconcile?”

Mother and Child in the Dunes illustrating Horary Astrology Question

Horary Astrology Question:

I divorced my husband in 1999 after 28 years of marriage. My oldest son was married at the time and only wanted my happiness. My youngest son was 18 at the time and remained living with my ex. After a year of dealing with increasing hostility from my son, I moved to California to live.

It has been six years since I have seen my youngest son and he has called me only when he needed money to solve a problem that he got himself into. After the last 2 years, he has now written me again for help. I don’t want to give him any money without responsibility and am waiting until I can have a real conversation with him. But I do want him back in my life in a real relationship. Will that ever happen & when?

—E.

Nina Gryphon:

Dear E.,

It seems to me that your younger son wants to have his cake and eat it too; he wants your money, but he also wants the moral high ground on the divorce. He cannot have both, regardless of how unjustified he thinks your divorce was. I cast a horary chart to get a sense of when a reconciliation may happen. The horoscope is below:

Horary Astrology Free Reading - Horoscope illustration: Reconcile with Son?

We can see that the situation is bothering you a great deal, and that you do love your son very much. Of course you do; he is your son! The ruler of your first house of self is Saturn, which is in the sign and exaltation of Mercury. Mercury rules the fifth house of children, and so it shows your son. Saturn is in the eighth house of fear, which indicates your anguish over the situation. [Frequent readers of this advice column will notice that in a disproportionate number of charts, the person’s planet is in the eighth house, showing that they are anxious or fearful about the issue.]

It may be that you do not have all the facts in the situation, or are simply blinded by the powerful emotions at work. This is shown by the fact that your co-significator, the Moon, is combust and moving deeper into a conjunction with the Sun. In either case, it would be most helpful for you to gather more information, both from third parties, and in talking to your son. You might learn more about the reasons for his hostility that you previously thought.

How does your son feel? He seems to have an exaggerated anger toward you; as evidenced by the fact that Mercury is in the fall of the Moon. In order for reconciliation to happen, Mercury will have to be out of Scorpio, to exit this bad reception with the Moon. Mercury is now grinding to a halt, as it will turn retrograde in a couple of days, and during this time, there will be two contacts with Saturn, indicating that you will be in touch with him more often in the not too distant future.

Venus will aspect Saturn (you), then Mars, then Mercury (your son). There may be an attempt to reconcile, perhaps by the means of a third party, but something may get in the way. Mercury itself will form a sextile aspect to Saturn, so I would expect another try at reconciliation in four or five months, maybe a little bit later than that. However, I don’t think that the two of you will really patch it up until the second half of 2008, which is symbolized by Mercury moving back into Libra, where it exalts Saturn. Regardless of the exact timing, I do believe that the two of you will eventually reconcile, and have a positive relationship, due to Mercury retrograding into Libra.

Mercury Retrograde in Scorpio and Libra October 12 – November 2, 2007

Hindu Merchants illustrating Mercury Retrograde in Scorpio and Libra October 12 – November 2, 2007

Mercury will go retrograde at 9° Scorpio on October 12, and turn direct on November 2 at 23° Libra. By the end of the year, Mercury will be zipping along near top speed, flying through the zodiac.

Unlike some, I personally don’t believe that Mercury retrograde sends the world into complete chaos, but there are people who seem to be more affected by it than others. If you find you’re one of these unlucky few, it will be best not to mail important documents during Mercury being retrograde, or close major deals. Alternatively, prepare for administrative and bureaucratic processes to take longer than usual, and make sure you have at least one copy of everything.

Even the gray clouds of Mercury have a silver lining, however, and this time is no exception. Note that Mercury is in its own triplicity by night when it is in Libra. So if you must do something mercurial (commerce, mailing, important writing projects, etc.) during this period, you can wait until Mercury regresses into Libra on October 24, and then act after sundown/before sunrise.

Alternatively, you can wait until Mercury stations around 23° Libra, where it is conjunct the benefic fixed star Spica, and gets extra juice that way.

Despite these dire warnings, there is some historical evidence that our ancestors dealt with Mercury retrograde much more boldly than ourselves. I would draw your attention to Marcantonio Michiel’s statue of the god Mercury, made for a Venetian merchant in the 16th century. The statue is interesting astrologically, because it has a plaque on its side listing the zodiacal positions of all the planets, suggesting a purpose beyond mere decoration. Mercury itself is retrograde, an interesting choice of timing for a Mercury statue. Perhaps the merchant patron was concerned about his ships coming back from their voyages, an excellent example and use of Mercury retrograde. (Watch for an article about the Mercury statue soon.)

Love on Watch illustrating Free Astrology Reading: Horary Astrology – “Will I Remarry?”

Horary Astrology Question:

I have been single for a long time, after my divorce. My ex was emotionally abusive and abused alcohol. It has taken me a long time to learn to trust men again and realize that there are good guys out there. My two sons are now adults and it is time for me to find some happiness in my life. Will I find a man to fall in love with and marry?

—I.

Nina Gryphon:

Dear I.,

From what people tell me, it’s not always easy for women over 40 to find Mr. Right, with the pool of male candidates of that age having shrunk dramatically due to marriage, too many hamburgers, and fast driving. But we can’t assume anything; as my teacher, John Frawley, says: “It is not we who know, it is the Astrology that knows.”

I cast a horary chart for the time I understood your question, and this horoscope is below:

Free Astrology Readings: Horary Astrology – “Will I Remarry?”

The good news is that there aren’t many factors against you getting married; we don’t see the kinds of dreadful afflictions to your significators that outright deny marriage. That said, in these kinds of questions, the older the person is, the stronger the testimonies must be to overcome the odds.

My concern in this chart is that you still don’t seem to be in the right frame of mind to have a constructive relationship with someone. As you say, this seems to be due to your negative past relationship, which must have been quite scarring emotionally. Your emotions, symbolized by the Moon, are still anti-relationship at this time. The Moon is in Virgo, the fall of Venus, which rules the seventh house of partners. The Moon’s most recent aspect was a conjunction to Saturn, which most likely represents your leaving this harmful marriage.

Also, right in line with what you said, you do seem to have some fear left over from the past, which makes it difficult to pursue relationships. The ruler of your first house of self is Mars in Cancer, placed in the eighth house of fear. Mars is very weak in Cancer, which is the sign of its fall. And due to Mars is placement in Cancer, we see that you are very much driven by your emotions right now…and how are your emotions? They are not really receptive to a partner at this time.

My sense is that you are jumping the gun a little bit in looking for a husband before you are ready to do so emotionally. I believe it can happen for you, as I don’t see major negatives against it, other than what’s going on with your emotions. However, it has been a long time since the divorce, and you are still scarred by your abusive marriage, so it may be a good time to get some emotional support/guidance so you can move forward constructively.

The Full Moon of October 26, 2007 in Political Astrology

October 8, 2007 by

Wreck in the Moonlight, illustrating Full Moon October 26, 2007 and its astrological meaning

Astrologically speaking, the Full Moon at 2° Taurus/2° Scorpio this month is very significant for the United States, and not for the better. This full Moon promises protracted violence, strife, and financial insolvency for the nation. The horoscope for the Full Moon, set for Washington, D.C., is below:

Full Moon October 26, 2007 and its Astrological Meaning. Full Moon in the Horoscope.

The stationary Mars in Cancer (in the sign of its fall, so quite malefic) is conjunct the Midheaven of the preceding solar eclipse of September 11, 2007, and opposite the Moon in Capricorn in the Grand Conjunction chart of 1762. Finally, this full Moon is exactly on the cusp of the crucial 10th house of the King, when set for Washington, D.C.. This establishes the importance of this particular full Moon, which we can expect to trigger some fairly disturbing events. Note that this malefic Mars is aspecting Saturn on the malefic South node, which is conjunct the second house of money.

To round out this parade of horribles, William Ramesey (citing the Arab astrologers) writes that Mars in the 12th house means “the people shall be much terrified and troubled by their enemies, from whence shall proceed slaughter and effusion of blood.” While I believe we should hope for the best, this is not an auspicious chart, connecting slaughter and financial insolvency. It is not a far leap to make the connection between these testimonies, the Iraq war, and the current financial troubles of the United States. The dollar may well plumb new depths.

As lunation charts also have everything to do with the weather, with the Full Moon so prominent in the sky, the week starting on October 26th may be a somewhat wet/cloudy week for the nation’s capital.

Free Astrology Readings: Horary Astrology – “Will I Get the Money?”

Oriental Girl in Palace Garden illustrating Free Astrology Readings: Horary Astrology – “Will I Get the Money to Renovate?”

Horary Astrology Question:

I work for myself so my income is variable. The facade of my house is collapsing. The builder is in the process of preparing yet another estimate because my husband will not finance the work. Therefore I must try and borrow the money. I don’t know to what extent the bank is prepared to lend me the money, as I am self-employed. I am British and have lived in France for 25 years. My husband is French. This is important to know as the bank is French. Will I get the money to renovate my house?

—J.

Nina Gryphon:

Dear J.,

A person much smarter than myself once told me that bankers only lend you money when they are convinced that you don’t need it. That said, it may be possible for you to squeeze water out of a rock; let’s see what the horary chart says. The horoscope for your question is below:

Free Horary Astrology Reading - Money to Renovate House?

The façade of your house does not appear to be in the best of shape: the ruler of your fourth house of real estate is Mars, which has recently entered its fall, the sign of Cancer. You can see how horary can be very literal — the house itself is falling. Mars is moving very slowly, as it prepares to enter first station before turning retrograde: your house is falling, though slowly. However, help may be on the way. Mars is about to sextile Saturn in Virgo, and since Saturn rules braces and reinforcements of all sorts, then the remedial measures should hold back the ravages of time.

So this is helpful; since we have evidence of the work being done, the money will come from somewhere. Let us take a look at the bank, and more specifically, its money. You will get some money from the bank, and I would expect this to happen very very shortly. The bank’s money is ruled by the Sun, which will very soon sextile your significator, Jupiter. How is the Sun? It is in the sign of its fall, though it is very strongly placed on the Midheaven. There may not be as much money as you had hoped. Perhaps at least in the short term, you may choose just to maintain the façade as it is, as opposed to going for a complete repair.

The Sun is also in detriment of Mars, the house, so the bank’s money harms the house. It may be that you will have to raise more money in the future to do a complete renovation of the façade and truly fix the problem, as opposed to just arresting further deterioration.

The good news is that the bank is willing to give you the money, as they believe that you have more money than you really do. Note that the Sun exalts Saturn, ruler of your second house of assets. It will be some time before you can truly renovate the house, but at least this first phase will be paid for.
