secretmessage Planets in Your Horoscope: Mercury in Gemini

Mercury enters its own zodiacal sign of Gemini on May 11, 2007, which is nice to see given its recent sojourns through its detriment in Pisces, and previous to that, Sagittarius. Mercury is the planet of the messenger god, of course, and it is at its best (and its worst) in the mutable signs, all of which deal with communication and transformation. In the airy sign of Gemini, Mercury is the sleight-of-hand magician, glib, articulate, and mentally agile. Mercury’s concept of truth is a very flexible one, and its placement in Gemini epitomizes the trickster and teller of tall tales.

Because of its innate flexibility, Mercury is the most influenced by the sign in which it is placed, its ruler, and any aspects. In that sense, it is a chameleonlike planet; the ancients did not consider it masculine or feminine, but rather influenced by these other factors. Too, the ancients considered it one of the indicators of the mind in the horoscope, specifically what today would call the left brain, our reasoning faculties. The stronger that Mercury would be in our natal horoscope, the better our ability to perform mercurial mental functions, such as analysis and general rapidfire thought.

Mercury is running at full speed nowadays, so it will not linger very much in its own sign; Mercury will enter the next sign of Cancer on May 29. As a result, if you wish to perform any mercurial functions, such as starting a book, negotiating, or doing anything related to the houses that Mercury rules in your natal horoscope, you would be well advised to get a move on.

Mercury will make only one Ptolemaic aspect during its sojourn through Gemini. That will be a sextile to Saturn on the 21st of May. Obviously, this would be particularly harmful to impressionable Mercury, so you should wait until that aspect has passed, which would take us into the 23rd. On the other hand, if you’re planning any Saturnian endeavors, the aspect from a strong Mercury could be somewhat helpful, especially if your Saturnian project has something to do with Mercury-type activities.
