Planets in Your Horoscope: Mars in Capricorn
January 9, 2007 by admin
Mars will enter Capricorn on January 16, 2007. This is great news, because Mars is exalted in Capricorn — it is on its best behavior in this sign (and in the signs it rules: Aries and Scorpio). It is super exalted in the 28th degree of Capricorn, that is, between 27 and 28° of Capricorn. That particular degree is the pinnacle of Mars’s strength in this sign.
Why is Mars so strong in Capricorn? There are a few reasons: first, Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, so Capricorn gives Mars the necessary structure that its sheer energy requires. Capricorn is a Cardinal sign, so even though it provides structure, it is still dynamic and active in a way that Fixed Earth Taurus, for example, is not. This is one reason why Mars is in its detriment in Taurus; it’s like putting a Ferrari engine in a Yugo.
Another reason why Mars is strong in Capricorn is that Capricorn is a cold and dry sign. Mars is a hot and dry planet. So the two of them share dryness, which makes Mars feel somewhat at home, but the coolness of Capricorn helps calm down Mars’s hot head.
So what does Mars entering Capricorn mean for you? If you’re like me, and Mars is pretty important in your horoscope, i.e. it rules important houses, aspects important planets, etc., you’ll want to choose Mars’s transit through Capricorn to do important things. This is called electional astrology, which is the art of electing just the right astrological moment to do something.
So, if Mars rules your ninth house of long/non-routine journeys (and Mars is relatively trouble-free in your horoscope), you will find Mars in Capricorn to be a beneficial influence should you take a long trip.
If you want to take advantage of Mars’s super-exalted passage through the 28th degree of Capricorn, you will want to start your ventures during the following time, given in GMT: February 22, 2007, 03:00 through February 23, 2007, 11:00.
This is also a good time to do Marsy things, even if Mars is not very important in your horoscope. Starting a fitness program, for example, would be a neat thing to do with Mars in Capricorn.

I have Mars/N.Node in Capricorn in my third house. mars actually rules my 7th house! Mars also Squares Uranus[in Libra] In my chart. Uranus is conjunct my Asc. I suppose I’m a bit of a pistol!
Hi Nicole,
It’s okay, embrace it
Mars in Capricorn is a great thing to have, and if it’s conjunct the North Node, so much the better! Happy upcoming Mars return!
Warmly,
Nina
Awww..thank you Nina! Wow I’m about to have a Mars return? I need to do some research on that!
Hi Nicole,
Yes, you are! It will likely coincide with some increased 3rd house activity. As an example, I have Mars in the 4th, and during one Mars return, I completely repainted a room in my house and made that room my new study. Lots of physical energy (Mars) put toward the home (4th).
Warmly,
Nina
I realize this article is from 2007, but in the near future (January, I think) Mars will be returning to my natal Mars in Capricorn in the second house, trine natal venus in taurus in the fifth house.
What’s in store for me?
16 degrees mars in capricorn? is it strong?
I had always thought of my situation being dominated by Sagittarius. Fire signs and Mutable signs emphasis with Succedent house emphasis and Leo Rising. I thought my 8th house or my 5th house dominated.
I have Mars at 28 degrees 14 minutes and Saturn at 15 degrees 3 minutes in Capricorn. I just learned that Mars and Capricorn are my dominant planet and sign. My dominant house is the 6th house. Mars conjuncts my Venus in Aquarius and my Aquarius Descendant from the 6th house. I have an Mid heaven at 20 degrees 46 minutes in Aries. I have worked for the defense department my entire career and hope to retire in a few years. I ran a sub five minute mile in the 9th grade and my first and only marathon at age 41. I am a day apart and almost to the same minute of day as the birth of Prince Andrews who has a career in the United Kingdom Royal Navy. I have been in three branches of the Armed Forces. Maybe Mars is strong in my instance. I lost my father due to Cancer when I was forty and he was sixty four. I had a terrific father. Regarding pets, I love my dog.
Taurus mars is actually a nice influence, both my venus and mars are in this sign, yes its a deterimental mars so it never has it the easy way out I suppose, but taurus is THE foremost sign of “determination” and this is definitely the most powerful and densest “earth” oriented influence and I think it friggin’ rocks! Hard rock to the core baby! That’s wuz up. I can’t identify with it or feel what its like but mars in cap is fascinating anyway, its a far more differentiated and less basic sort of mars aspect but not necessarily as formiddable as the basic dense earth fixity of mars in t;) Mars in taurus is possibly a more production oriented and procreative mars, probably the most in the zodiac, while mars in cap which is “karmically” ahead has its own earth related qualities, often similar me thinks but with consideration to the distinct psychological platitudes.
