Astrology of Current Affairs: The Astrological Path to 9/11

Here we are at the 5-year anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and everyone still wonders at how it could have happened. I am not a historian nor political expert, but as an astrologer, one can see that ominous signs were present astrologically well before the 9/11 attacks.

To see the hints of 9/11 in the horoscope, we do not have an exact birthchart for the United States – we know it started on July 4, 1776, but the time is very difficult to pin down. The good news is that this is not necessary. Rather, it is far easier and far more accurate to use the horoscope for the Grand Conjunction before 1776. The Grand Conjunction is an old term for the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction which happens every 20 years. It is a major event for nations and individuals, because its imprint lasts for such a long time and it is such a rare event. The Grand Conjunction chart for the United States is below:

The Grand Conjunction of 1762 – United States’ Horoscope

The Grand Conjunction occurred at 12 Aries, conjunct the fixed star Alpheratz. Robson writes that it is of the nature of Jupiter and Venus, and gives “independence, freedom, love, riches, honour and a keen intellect.” It is highly benefic, especially for business success. The one fly in the ointment in the horoscope of the United States is that Saturn is in its fall in Aries, and as such is dreadfully weak. Saturn rules the 9th and 10th houses of the United States horoscope, so we know that the country’s reputation, honor and standing will be especially vulnerable whenever Saturn is afflicted. Another weak point of the natal horoscope is the Moon in Capricorn (in its detriment) in the 8th house of death. The Moon squares the Grand Conjunction, and rules the 2nd and 3rd houses of the horoscope. Thus, whenever the Moon is afflicted, we will see financial trouble, as well as a lack of national confidence in general (the 2nd rules the esteem).

Progressed Horoscope of the United States for 9/11/2001

This horoscope has a few troubling points, mainly because of the malefic fixed stars that afflict it. The Midheaven (the house of honor and fame) is on Vindemiatrix, a Saturnian star also called “the Widow-maker.” The progressed Moon had recently conjoined the Midheaven, setting events in motion. The Moon is also applying to a square of Mars in the first house – the first house represents the country as such, and when violent Mars is triggered in the 1st, we can expect war, unrest, and violence. The progressed Moon has also just opposed the Grand Conjunction in the original chart, triggering it (and its difficult Saturn). The natal Saturn is in Aries, the sign of Mars, indicating a propensity to violence. Progressed Mars is in Capricorn, the sign of Saturn. Needless to say, the potential for explosive violence is there, waiting to be set off. The stage has been set for trouble, violence and sorrow.

Eclipse prior to 9/11/2001

The eclipse of July 5, 2001, triggers both the Grand Conjunction chart and the progressed chart in dramatic ways. The eclipse itself was at 13 Cancer-Capricorn, which falls on the difficult natal Moon in Capricorn. The Moon is on the fixed star Algorab, a highly destructive fixed star of the nature of Mars and Saturn. However, there are still other dramatic testimonies of trouble. The eclipse also triggers the progressed Mars in Capricorn the 1st house. Mars itself is on the fixed star Wega, also known as the Falling Vulture. The eclipse horoscope has Saturn right on the Midheaven. Saturn and the Midheaven are also conjunct the Ascendant of the natal Grand Conjunction, bringing home violence and sorrow. Whenever the angles of an eclipse trigger those of the natal horoscope, a major event often happens. For individuals, it is often death; for countries, it is often trauma and major violence.

    Hi Nina,

I’m enjoying your site. I appreciate classical astrology, and I’m lapping up your interpretations and articles.

It makes sense to me that the chart for the Grand Conjunction of 1762 yields up quite a bit of information about the US, and maybe more than many of the charts used for the US. I’ve always wondered if the founding fathers were vague about a birth chart on purpose. After all, as you know from our studies in classical astrology, knowledge of a birth chart can be very powerful if misused. Many of them were Masons, knew astrology, and were very well versed in the esoteric traditions.

Since you have a background in classical, I hope you don’t mind if point out some of the things I’ve noticed going on in the 911 chart. Anything comments you have are appreciated.

One thing I’ve always tossed around in my mind is the VOC Moon in the 911 chart. I’m still mulling it over.

I never got around to comparing the charts for the cities involved with the event chart. This may be a good chance to dig out all the charts. To me, the event chart without the charts for the cities is only half of the picture. My reaction was very clear in the chart comparisons; so the effects on the cities must be considered. I didn’t feel the horror that most people did on that day. Iv’e been shocked before due to a closeness to hijackings, wars and such, so I was more prepared than others.

Here are a few other things I noticed in the 911-event chart.

Morning Star Venus is the ruler of the ascendant, (which is in the Via Combusta), and ruler of the 8th of death. Venus and Sun are in mutual reception by triplicity, and Sun is separating from the Saturn/Pluto opposition.

Out of bounds , exalted, Mars is less than 2degress from the south node opposing the VOC Moon. Saturn, which appears to be in a separating opposition to Pluto, is the dispositor of Mars. Saturn goes Rx on 9/26 and will oppose Pluto two more times.

Mercury, ruler of 9th of foreigners, also rules the malefic 12th of sorrow, and is conjunct the ascendant, disposted by Venus and we see the loop with Sun/Venus. Mercury is in trine with Saturn, which I’ve read the ancients considered a malefic aspect. All the other positive aspects are separating.

Nothing in the chart looks good.

Thanks for your great insights and food for thought.

    Dear Susan,

Thank you for visiting my blog and for your kind words. I appreciate both very much. As far as the VOC Moon goes…well, I have found that the only thing that stops functioning during VOC periods are astrologers. The Mars-Saturn connection is a theme repeated from the Grand Conjunction chart and bears watching. I am not sure what this “Pluto” thing is.

This is fascinating! I can’t recall anyone else harking back to the 1762 chart before now.

Is it possible that the 20 year cycle of Presidential death was broken with 9/11 then? Instead of loosing a President, the Nation lost itself? Or have I wandered too far down the rabbit hole?

I like you comment about astrologers and the VOC. That’s so funny, and so true. Frawley may have said the same thing Lee Lehman used to say. Many of the strictures in horary are an excuse not to answer a question, not get your head chopped off, or take a vacation.

Several years ago when Lee did experiements in biological labs, she noted the VOC Moon always caused unexpected, unexplained, results. As she said, it isn’t that nothing happened, it’s that the results were all so d… odd.

    Hello all

I think if you progress a birth chart of 9d 11m Gemini rising to 9/11 you will see the necessary aspects. Based on July 4. 1776, 2.20 am, Philidelphia.
You may know of Robert Hands comments about the clock on the back of the 100 dollar bill. It reads about 2;21 and of course was a 12 hour clock and so am or pm are both possible. I came up with my 9d Gemini 11m chart without the knowdledge of the clock (so Im off about 1 min or so). I came up with this chart lone before 9/11 as well. It seems ironical that the numbers 9 & 11 agree.

    Hi Gene,

Thanks for visiting. The challenge, in my experience, with rectification is: how long is a piece of string? All events will not be covered by a particular birthtime. This is one reason why I strongly prefer the ancient Arabic approach of using the preceding Grand Conjunction, which is the “clock” measuring the birth and demise of countries and dynasties.

    Warmly,
    Nina

Is there a reference point similar to the Grand Conjunction that could be utilized for a person (versus a country) if their birth time is unknown?
    Thanks,
    Carla.
