Best Time to Conceive

Finding the best time to conceive your baby can seem like a mysterious, arbitrary process. However, for centuries, people have used astrology to find the most fertile times for men and women, and also the most likely times to conceive a boy or girl, as desired.

Below is a list of astrological rules for conception, adapted from William Ramesey’s Astrology Restored (1653). If you know a little astrology, you can put the rules below to good use. If doing calculations is not your thing, you can have me elect your best time to conceive.

Remember that the rules for conception work best when applied to your natal horoscope, and natal house rulers. This personalizes the time of conception to your own cycles, which is key.

Best Time to Conceive a Baby

Venus and the Moon should be strong by sign, or at least unafflicted. If Venus is afflicted, the woman will not be fertile at that time; if the Moon, the man.

The Ascendant should be in Libra, with the Moon in it, and Cancer on the 10th house, as it is a fertile sign.

If this is too much to observe, be sure that the Ascendant and the Moon are strong at the time of conception, with Jupiter strong on the 10th house cusp. If you cannot get Jupiter on the 10th house cusp, put him on the cusp of the 11th or 5th house, or such that he sextiles or trines the Ascendant, its ruler, or the Moon. You can also place the Moon or the ruler of the Ascendant on the 5th house cusp.

The Lord of the Ascendant should be strong, and remain so in the 7th through 10th months after conception, as the baby can be born at any time.

Best Time to Conceive a Boy

The sign on the Ascendant, the sign on the 5th house, the rulers of these houses, the Moon and its dispositor should all be in masculine signs (or as many of these as possible).

If this is not possible, the lord of the hour, and the planet to which the Moon next applies should be masculine.

The angles should be in fixed signs, the ascendant should be a masculine sign. Make sure that no malefic or feminine planets are angular.

The Sun and Moon should be strong or at least unafflicted, and they should sextile or trine each other.

If the Ascendant, Moon, and Jupiter are in masculine signs, you will conceive a boy.

Best Time to Conceive a Girl

The sign on the Ascendant, the sign on the 5th house, the rulers of these houses, the Moon and its dispositor should all be in feminine signs (or as many of these as possible).

If this is not possible, the lord of the hour, and the planet to which the Moon next applies should be masculine.

If the Ascendant, Moon, and Jupiter are in feminine signs, a girl will be conceived.
